abstract An individual's self-knowledge (self-identity) is one of the most humanizing values of civilization. Music's interrelatedness with feeling, value and self-identity is explained and analyzed. The nurturance and furtherance of an individual's self-identity is synonymous with the individual's mental and spiritual growth. The way in which an individual can grow mentally and spiritually through music is investigated by using the Baha'i writings on musIC as a foundation for philosophical inquiry. The use of the Baha'i writings helps to explain and clarify the more than 2000-year-old mystery of how music affects the human soul.
