abstract "This book is a study of the life of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá ‘Abbas (1844-1921) in its regional and social context – the turbulent, heterogeneous and turbulent Levant, which was his home in his many appearances for some 100 years. The book opens with ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s role as secretary and protector of his father, Bahá’u’lláh, the founding prophet of the Bahá’í Faith, after his expulsion from Iran and imprisonment in Acre in 1868. The following chapters present a description of the social connections that ‘Abdu’l-Bahá created in Greater Syria in the final decades of the Ottoman period; his writings dealing with contemporary questions; the challenges that his mission and duties posed to him; issues he dealt with in his travels to Lebanon, Egypt, Europe and North America; his preparations for the anticipated arrival of the First World War; his extensive contacts and correspondence in the last years of his life. 'Abdu'l-Bahá's deep and vigorous involvement in the region was marked by numerous connections, friendships, and collaborations with key figures. 'Abdu'l-Bahá had extensive intellectual connections and initiatives in the fields of education, agriculture, and community life. This study anchors 'Abdu'l-Bahá's relations with the Arab world and his guidance of the growth of the Bahá'í Faith and its transformation into a world religion by describing the experiences of the nascent Bahá'í Faith in the Middle East. All of these are skillfully woven into the historical fabric of the entire region in the late Ottoman period" -- back cover.
