On the Need for One-on-One Mentoring

Wm. Keith Bookwalter

2026-03

About: This document proposes the systematic integration of one-on-one mentoring into the Bahá’í community’s efforts under the Nine Year Plan (2022–2031), particularly to support new believers and those approaching membership. Mentoring is defined as a relationship in which a trusted, experienced individual guides another in spiritual development, knowledge, and service.

Drawing on personal experience and authoritative texts, the author argues that individualized mentoring complements existing community-building processes, especially the institute system. A passage from Shoghi Effendi outlines a model in which a mentor assesses a seeker’s receptivity, applies appropriate teaching methods, nurtures spiritual growth with patience and kindness, and gradually integrates the individual into community life. The ultimate aim is to help the individual reach maturity and arise independently to serve and teach others.

The proposal emphasizes that mentoring should be voluntary and could be coordinated by Local Spiritual Assemblies or committees, with experienced believers offering support either in person or online. It also suggests that mentoring can be a meaningful role for veteran Bahá’ís, alongside other forms of service.

To guide the content of mentoring, the document references sixteen key topics identified by Shoghi Effendi for deepening new believers, including the Faith’s teachings, history, institutions, laws, and relationship to society. The author recommends developing structured educational materials at various levels of complexity, along with guidelines for mentors, to ensure consistency and effectiveness.

Overall, the paper advocates for a deliberate, organized mentoring system to strengthen individual development, enhance participation, and sustain long-term community growth.
