Mrs. Rose Shaw, from San Francisco, in her seventies, moved to Halifax to strengthen the work in that city which had the highest concentration of Blacks in Canada at that time. She became the first Black member of the Halifax Spiritual Assembly and chose to live in the black slum area of the city, where she stayed for about a year.
