Chapter 16
---------------
The Cord of God -- The Independent Prophets and the Dependent/Lesser Prophets.
1)
Bahá'u'lláh, the Independent Prophet, is the Cord of God.
Convey My greetings unto those whose faces mirror forth the radiance of
Bahá, then mention to them this utterance which cheereth the eyes of
the righteous. The glory of God rest upon thee and upon such as have
firmly clung to the Cord of God, the Revealer of verses....
-- Bahá'u'lláh, Tablets of Bahá'u'lláh, p. 198
Say: It behoveth every one that holdeth fast to the hem of Our Robe to
be untainted by anything from which the Concourse on high may be
averse. Thus hath it been decreed by thy Lord, the All-Glorious, in
this His perspicuous Tablet. Say: Set ye aside My love, and commit what
grieveth Mine heart? What is it that hindereth you from comprehending
what hath been revealed unto you by Him Who is the All-Knowing, the
All-Wise?
We verily behold your actions. If We perceive from them the sweet
smelling savor of purity and holiness, We will most certainly bless
you. Then will the tongues of the inmates of Paradise utter your praise
and magnify your names amidst them who have drawn nigh unto God.
Cling thou to the hem of the Robe of God, and take thou firm hold on
His Cord, a Cord which none can sever. Beware that the clamor of them
that have repudiated this Most Great Announcement shall not deter thee
from achieving thy purpose. Proclaim what hath been prescribed unto
thee in this Tablet, though all the peoples arise and oppose thee. Thy
Lord is, verily, the All-Compelling, the Unfailing Protector.
-- Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, p. 307
2)
The Arabian Youth (the Bab), the Independent Prophet, and the Cord of God.
O peoples of the earth! Cleave ye tenaciously to the Cord of the
All-Highest God, which is but this Arabian Youth, Our Remembrance--He
Who standeth concealed at the point of ice amidst the ocean of fire.
Chapter CXXIX.
O people of the earth! By the righteousness of the One true God, I am
the Maid of Heaven begotten by the Spirit of Bahá, abiding within the
Mansion hewn out of a mass of ruby, tender and vibrant; and in this
mighty Paradise naught have I ever witnessed save that which
proclaimeth the Remembrance of God by extolling the virtues of this
Arabian Youth. Verily there is none other God but your Lord, the
All-Merciful. Magnify ye, then, His station, for behold, He is poised
in the midmost heart of the All-Highest Paradise as the embodiment of
the praise of God in the Tabernacle wherein His glorification is
intoned.
-- The Báb, Selections from the Writings of the Bab, p. 54
Seek ye refuge in God from whatsoever might lead you astray from the Source of His Revelation and hold fast unto His Cord, for whoso holdeth fast unto His allegiance, he hath attained and will attain salvation in all the worlds.
-- The Bab, Selections from the Writings of the Bab, p. 85
3)
Imam Ali, the first Dependent /Lesser Prophet in the era of Muhammad, is the Cord of God, as
indicated in Quran 3:103 and also by Imam Ali himself in the subsequent
passage. Those who "fall into disputations after receiving Clear Signs"
and "reject Faith after accepting it" refers to those who rejected the
Holy Imams..
GOD says in the Qur'án: "Take ye hold of the Cord of God, all of you, and become ye not disunited."[1]
[1 Qur'án 3:103.]
-- Abdu'l-Baha, Tablets of the Divine Plan, p. 101
3:102 O ye who believe! Fear God as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islám.
3:103 And hold fast, all together, by the rope [cord] which God
(stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and
remember with gratitude God's favour on you; for ye were enemies and He
joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren;
and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it.
Thus doth God make His Signs clear to you: That ye may be guided.
3:104 Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that
is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong: They
are the ones to attain felicity.
3:105 Be not like those who are divided amongst themselves and fall
into disputations after receiving Clear Signs: For them is a dreadful
penalty,-
3:106 On the Day when some faces will be (lit up with) white, and some
faces will be (in the gloom of) black: To those whose faces will be
black, (will be said): "Did ye reject Faith after accepting it? Taste
then the penalty for rejecting Faith."
3:107 But those whose faces will be (lit with) white,- they will be in (the light of) God's mercy: therein to dwell (for ever).
3:108 These are the Signs of God: We rehearse them to thee in Truth: And God means no injustice to any of His creatures.
-- The Qur'an: 3 - AL-I-IMRAN,
The truth is Mine and certitude is at My side. Leadership is Mine and
the righteous shall follow Me. I am the first to acknowledge faith, the
Cord of God that shall not be broken, the One who will raise the world
to justice even as it hath been brought low by oppression. I am the
companion of Gabriel and the archangel Michael is beside Me. I am the
tree of guidance, and the essence of righteousness. I shall gather
together the world of creation through the Word of God that gathers
together all things. I give life unto humanity and I am the treasury of
all divine commands. To Me hath been given the Luminous Pen and the
Crimson Camel.
-- Imam Ali, Sermon of Glorification (a provisional translation by K. Fananapazir).

4)
The Cord of God, Baha'u'llah's Dependent Prophets ("My chosen servants").
Assist ye, O My people, My chosen servants who have arisen to make
mention of Me among My creatures and to exalt My Word throughout My
realm. These, truly, are the stars of the heaven of My loving
providence and the lamps of My guidance unto all mankind. But he whose
words conflict with that which hath been sent down in My Holy Tablets
is not of Me. Beware lest ye follow any impious pretender. These
Tablets are embellished with the seal of Him Who causeth the dawn to
appear, Who lifteth up His voice between the heavens and the earth. Lay
hold on this Sure Handle and on the Cord of My mighty and unassailable Cause.
-- Bahá'u'lláh, The Kitab-i-Aqdas, p. 61
5)
Abdu'l-Baha, the Branch, is the Cord of God, like Imam Ali.
... glorified by Him, in other passages of His writings, as the "Ark of Salvation" and as "the Cord stretched betwixt the earth and the Abha Kingdom,"
-- Shoghi Effendi, God Passes By, p. 238
6)
Bahá'u'lláh, the Independent Prophet, is the Cord of God ("Thy strong cord that none can sever").
Thou beholdest, O my Lord, how I have set myself towards the ocean of
Thy grace and the adored sanctuary of Thy favors. Deny me not, I pray
Thee, the drops which are sprinkled from the ocean of Thy gifts;
neither do Thou withhold from me the outpourings of the clouds of Thy
tender mercies. I am he, O my God, that hath clung to the resplendent
hem of Thy robe, and taken hold on Thy strong cord that none can sever.
I testify that Thou hast created me, and nourished me, and brought me
up, and fed me, and sustained me, that I may recognize Him Who is the
Day-Spring of Thy signs, and the Revealer of Thy clear tokens. I offer
unto Thee, therefore, most high praise, O Lord my God, that Thou hast
suffered me to attain unto this most sublime station and this most
august seat. Thou, truly, art the Great Giver, the Almighty, the
All-Bountiful, the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Generous.
Illumine mine eyes, O my Lord, with the splendors of the horizon of Thy
Revelation, and brighten my heart with the effulgence of the Day-Star
of Thy knowledge and wisdom, that I may set myself wholly towards Thy
face, and be rid of all attachment to any one except Thee, in such wise
that the changes and chances of the world will be powerless to hinder
me from recognizing Him Who is the Manifestation of Thine own Self, and
the Revealer of Thy signs, and the Day-Spring of Thy Revelation, and
the Repository of Thy Cause.
-- Baha'u'llah, Prayers and Meditations by Baha'u'llah, p. 227
7)
XXI. O Salman! The door of the knowledge of the Ancient Being hath ever
been, and will continue for ever to be, closed in the face of men. No
man's understanding shall ever gain access unto His holy court. As a
token of His mercy, however, and as a proof of His loving-kindness, He
hath manifested unto men the Day Stars of His divine guidance, the
Symbols of His divine unity, and hath ordained the knowledge of these
sanctified Beings to be identical with the knowledge of His own Self.
Whoso recognizeth them hath recognized God. Whoso hearkeneth to their
call, hath hearkened to the Voice of God, and whoso testifieth to the
truth of their Revelation, hath testified to the truth of God Himself.
Whoso turneth away from them, hath turned away from God, and whoso
disbelieveth in them, hath disbelieved in God. Every one of them is the
Way of God that connecteth this world with the realms above [the Cord of God], and the
Standard of His Truth unto every one in the kingdoms of earth and
heaven. They are the Manifestations of God amidst men, the evidences of
His Truth, and the signs of His glory.
