The National Spiritual Assembly announced the news of the appointment by the International Board of Trustees of Ḥuqúqu’lláh of the following individuals to the National Board of Trustees of Ḥuqúqu’lláh in Canada, serving for a term of five years commencing on 1 December 2025: Mr. Milad Asdaghi, Mrs. Golru Azizi-Ashraf, Mrs. Charlotte Mosleh, Mrs. Tara Nakhjavani, Dr. Afsaneh Oliver, Dr. Hooshmand Sheshbaradaran and Mr. Shahin Sobhani. The area of jurisdiction of this Board comprises Canada and Saint Pierre and Miquelon.

They also announced that Mr. John MacLeod and Dr. Faran Vafaie, who have served as members of the institution of Ḥuqúqu’lláh and are now being released. The 49th annual Association for Bahá'í Studies conference was held at the Telus Convention Center in Calgary, AB. [ABS2025; BWNS1819]

The National Convention was held in Toronto, ON. Those elected to the National Spiritual Assembly were: Mehran Anvari, Alex Arjomand, Jordan Bighorn, Zelalem Bimrew Kasse, Nabet Fani, Hoda Farahmandpour, Ciprian Jauca, Karen McKye and Veronica Robinson. The officers were selected on the 3rd of May and they were: Chairman – Ciprian Jauca; Vice-chairman – Jordan Bighorn; Treasurer – Mehran Anvari; Secretary – Karen McKye; Assistant Secretary – Nabet Fani. [from the letter from the NSA dated 6 May 2025]

This year’s Convention held special historical significance, marking the 100th anniversary of the election of the first National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the United States and Canada, at a convention held in Eliot, Maine in July 1925. [OPA Canada 2 July 2025]

At the 17th Annual Geneva summit for Human Rights and Democracy, Canadian Irwin Cotler, the Founder and International Chair of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, was honoured with the Defender of Human Rights Award. Mr Colter could not attend in person but he sent his acceptance speech in video format. [RWCHR website 24Feb25]

Note: the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development was created to be a non-partisan, independent Canadian institution. It was established by an act of the Canadian parliamentin 1988 to "encourage and support the universal values of human rights and the promotion of democratic institutions and practices around the world".
