'Concerning some "sectaries of the Baab," whom he calls an impostor, and of whose communistic religious tenets he says only that they are very difficult to get at, he relates the following: In 1880 a priest of Ispahan was denounced by his wife as a Baabi. Thrown into prison by order of the Governor, a son of the Shah, he avowed his Baabism, and refused to retract, while denying the crimes laid to his charge. He was led in chains to a place of execution, and bastinadoed, but offered his life if he would curse Baab. He replied: "Curses on you, your Prince, your King, and all oppressors," and suffered death. A few days after his execution three brothers, intimate acquaintances of Dr. Wills, were arrested as guilty of Baabism....' A second example of 'cruel oppression and fierce barbarism' against the Babis follows. See #17452 |

"It is said that he [the Shah] has lost confidence in his Musulman guard, since the attempt on his life last summer by five or six persons of the Bâbee sect. They approached him while out on a hunting excursion, under pretence of having a petition to present. Not suspecting any evil design, he reined up his horse and stopped. The ruffians then drew forth pistols, which they had concealed under their garments, and discharged them at the King. He fell from his horse wounded, though not seriously. The affair was investigated; and wherever persons were found, who were suspected of belonging to the Bâbee sect, they were seized and put to death with every variety of torture. Several hundred persons were killed in this manner at the capital; and messengers were dispatched to various parts of the empire with orders to the local governors to show no mercy to those professing bâbeeism [sic]." | English | BABI FAITH; IRAN; NASIRI'D-DIN SHAH | 76–77 | 11.

"In Persia the Shah has narrowly escaped assassination. While he was hunting near Tehrân, on the 15th of August, six, 'ill-dressed' Persians belonging to the sect of Babi, a religious chief put to death some time since, approached the Shah with petitions. Having presented them, they demanded redress for the insult to their religion. Two seized the bridle of his horse; and before the attendants at a distance, came up, two of the assassins fired their pistols. The Shah was slightly wounded in the cheek and thigh, but retained his seat. His servants arrived at a gallop, cut down two of the assassins, and pursued and captured one. Translation of title: Report on the Work of the Council of the Asiatic Society. Footnote refers to a collection of 161 manuscripts given to the library of Saint Petersburg in 1864 by Mr. Khanikof (H. v. Chanykov) that includes the “Koran of the Babis,” presumably meaning the Arabic Bayan. The catalog of the collection, edited by von B. Dorn, and entitled, “Die Sammlung von morgenlaendischen Handschriften, welche die Kaiserliche öffentliche Bibliothek zu St Petersburg im Jahre 1864,” contains extracts from the Bayan. Jules Mohl writes the following about the Babis (rough translation): "This is a modern and extremely curious sect of the Persians. Officially, the movement does not exist, and its proponents are mainly exterminated today, but we will still hear it spoken of, because it is only one symptom of an interior work being done in the center of Islam. It appears that the quietism of Sufism no longer satisfies the spirits that revolt against Islamic doctrine…. One sees in the doctrines of the Babis and other secret sects of today a mixture of religious and political aspirations that make them very remarkable. We are still imperfectly informed of the doctrines of the Bab, and the extracts that Mr. Dorn gives are the first authentic data we have on them. It is significant that the Bab, though Persian of race and born in Shiraz, wrote in the Arabic language, thus proving that he was writing above all to the classes of well-read women. Soon we will know more in detail about this mysterious movement. Mr. Kazim Beg, in Saint-Pétersbourg, wrote of its history in Russian, and has prepared a French edition of this work; later he will publish the writings of Bab and other supporting documents [see #22919-22923]. On his side, the count Gobineau is at this moment publishing a work on modern Persia [see #20360], in which he will insert translations and analyze the dogmatic writings of the Babis." |

March | 1905 | 1905 | Edward Arnold | London | 10. | Book | "Babis:" pp. 271-2 and 287 in appendix. p. 271: 'The second impulse, the impulse on the liberal side, springs, as it is also needless to say, from Persia. The pretension of Seyed Mohammed Ali to be the Bab, or Gate, or "intermediary," was in effect an attempt to supply the thing needed in Mohammedanism, both socially and religiously. It was an attempt to humanise and vitalise the faith and to endow it with an authoritative, recognised presence and voice, such as it must possess if it is to form a rallying point for social organisation. Consequently when the Bab declared himself, social and religious reformers alike saw in him their opportunity, and he was backed up not only by the spiritually-minded, by mystics, enthusiasts, and visionaries, but also by men of affairs, men of intellect, sagacity, and learning. A liberalism of ideas became the characteristic of the new sect. It was distinguished by its cheerfulness, hospitality, and charity. In nothing was its enlightenment more shown than in its treatment of women. The old Eastern degradations and disabilities were abolished. Polygamy, concubinage, the use of the veil, were disallowed or discouraged. The equality of the sexes was recognised. And all this reform, all this liberalism, all this spirit of progress gathers round the person of an individual who aspires to play much the same part towards Mohammedanism that Christ played towards Judaism....' The main body of text ends (p. 274) with an informed analysis of orthodox Islam as both a civilizing force and an obstacle to progress, and with an evaluation of its future prospects. |

"Another illustration of the same tendency [of Islam to limit freedom of thought and action] is the fact here brought out (p. 302) that Beha and his followers often loosely called the Babites, although we should expect to find them in the liberal camp, are frank opponents of the recent revolutions in Turkey and Persia. In Prof. E. G. Browne's 'Persian Revolution' (pp. 424-429) the same paradox is discussed, and the view is urged that Beha enjoined upon his followers abstention from political activity because their aims should be wholly spiritual. Yet there cannot be much doubt that a party led by an inspired and almost divine leader cannot logically act and choose for itself, and the utterances of Beha himself indicate a genuinely legitimistic dislike of the new word and idea, hurriya, 'freedom.'" | Vorlesungen über den Islam / Von Ignaz Goldziher. -- Heidelberg: Carl Winter's Universitatsbuchhandlung | English | GOLDZIHER, IGNAZ; ISLAM | 168–169 | 11.

As an instance of this, we may refer to the rise and progress of the religion of the Babys, which although now proscribed in Persia, reckons its followers by thousands, and even by hundreds of thousands. The founder, Syud Ali Mahommed, although claiming descent from the prophet Mahomet, was the son of a grocer of Shiraz.... In a short time the Babys became so numerous that in the reign of Mahommed Shah a decree was issued by the chief religious authorities in Persia making it a capital crime for any one to profess the tenets of the false prophet, Ali Mahommed.... Desperate was the courage displayed by the Babys in the defence of Zinjan, and the women, like the maidens of Saragossa, vied with the men in deeds of valour; but all was in vain, for, after many months, the Babys were overcome, and all the defenders who survived -- men, women, and children -- were ruthlessly butchered by the royal troops.... The result of all this cruelty was to create a feeling of sympathy for the Babys, whoso crime [attempt on the life of the Shah] was lost sight of in the cruel punishment inflicted upon them. And Babyism is by no means extinguished in Persia; it only smoulders in secret to burst out some day in an open flame." "In Persia, where Mohammedanism has greatly degenerated, a movement to purify it was set on foot in the year 1843 by Mirza Ali Khan (sic). He taught a kind of mysticism to which the unity of God was asserted and the re-absorption of all things into God, the Divine will being revealed by the medium of special messengers or prophets, among whom were Moses, Jesus Christ, Mohammed, himself, the Bab or 'Gate,' and one, the great Revealer, who would hereafter appear and succeed him. As the Bab or 'Gate,' he was the way by which man gained access to God. He denounced polygamy, prohibited divorce, and abolished the practice of veiling women, in which efforts he was aided by two missionary apostles, Husein Bushrewyeh and Mohammed Ali, and a remarkable woman, Zernyn Tadj (sic). The progress of the sect, which had been very rapid, was checked by the Persian Government, who defeated the Babis or followers of the Bab in 1848, and subsequently put the Bab himself to death. A considerable number of Persians are more or less openly adherents of Babyism at the present time." The author apparently took his account from Charles Reginald Haines's, "Islam as a Missionary Religion." |
