Appleton and Company New York 10. 1866 Book Bahá'í Faith: V:696 in article on Persia. This article, originally published in 1866, likely contains the earliest encyclopedic reference to the Bábi religion in English: 'Of more recent origin is the sect of the Bâbis, whose history forms one of the most interesting episodes both of the modern history of Persia and recent history of Mohammedanism.' A brief history of the Faith based primarily on Gobineau's work follows, including the following: 'Among them [the Báb's desciples] was the most learned woman of Persia, to whom the name Gurrat-el-Ain [sic] ('Delight of the Eye') was given, and who subsequently with numerous other followers suffered death for her faith..' The article ends with the following: '...the general opinion of those best acquainted with Persian affairs is, that Bâbism is not yet extinct, but still has large numbers of followers.' As an instance of this, we may refer to the rise and progress of the religion of the Babys, which although now proscribed in Persia, reckons its followers by thousands, and even by hundreds of thousands. The founder, Syud Ali Mahommed, although claiming descent from the prophet Mahomet, was the son of a grocer of Shiraz.... In a short time the Babys became so numerous that in the reign of Mahommed Shah a decree was issued by the chief religious authorities in Persia making it a capital crime for any one to profess the tenets of the false prophet, Ali Mahommed.... Desperate was the courage displayed by the Babys in the defence of Zinjan, and the women, like the maidens of Saragossa, vied with the men in deeds of valour; but all was in vain, for, after many months, the Babys were overcome, and all the defenders who survived -- men, women, and children -- were ruthlessly butchered by the royal troops.... The result of all this cruelty was to create a feeling of sympathy for the Babys, whoso crime [attempt on the life of the Shah] was lost sight of in the cruel punishment inflicted upon them. And Babyism is by no means extinguished in Persia; it only smoulders in secret to burst out some day in an open flame."

Moojan Momen, in The Bábí and Bahá'í Religions, 1844-1944, wrote the following (p.27): "In 1862, there arrived in Persia, a physician to an Italian diplomatic Mission, a man who was in his later years to achieve considerable eminence [he became a professor of zoology and was among the earliest supporters of Darwinism]: Michele Lessona. According to his own statement, Lessona met there a Persian of high lineage named Dávud Khán who spoke Italian. From this man, Lessona learnt of the Bábís. Lessona also met and conversed with Gobineau, as well as visiting some of the places connected with Bábí history. Lessona returned to Italy, and in about 1870 he wrote a 66-page book entitled I Babi, which was printed years later in 1881 by Vincenzo Bona of Turin...." Italian BABI FAITH 66

'Concerning some "sectaries of the Baab," whom he calls an impostor, and of whose communistic religious tenets he says only that they are very difficult to get at, he relates the following: In 1880 a priest of Ispahan was denounced by his wife as a Baabi. Thrown into prison by order of the Governor, a son of the Shah, he avowed his Baabism, and refused to retract, while denying the crimes laid to his charge. He was led in chains to a place of execution, and bastinadoed, but offered his life if he would curse Baab. He replied: "Curses on you, your Prince, your King, and all oppressors," and suffered death. A few days after his execution three brothers, intimate acquaintances of Dr. Wills, were arrested as guilty of Baabism....' A second example of 'cruel oppression and fierce barbarism' against the Babis follows.

"Mirza Ali Mohammed, of Shiraz, founder of Bâbism (1842), the political pantheism of the Persian masses at the present time, declared, 'He who would know the way to God can go only by me.'2 His preaching against the Mollahs and their traditions resulted, contrary to his desires, in armed rebellion; whence came terrible persecutions, and a record of heroic martyrdom unsurpassed in history, in which his own (1849) was the most noble and touching instance.3 His pure theology and ethics, — in many respects the crown of Sufism, — his justice to the social relations, and to a love of order and peace which rebuked the fanatical passion of his followers, were really an advance on the Koran itself; and it seems by no means without reason that the Prophet is wholly ignored by him in the interest of these higher spiritual conceptions.
