  1. 1849-05-10
      The end of the siege of the fort at Shaykh Tabarsí. Two hundred and two Bábís were tricked into leaving the shrine. [BW18:381]
    • DB400 says they accompanied Quddús.
    • They were not conducted to their homes as promised but were set upon by the Prince's soldiers. Some are killed, others sold into slavery. The fortifications around the shrine were razed to the ground. [DB403–4; MH283]
    • See DB414–29 for a list of 173 martyrs of Tabarsí. Nabil states [DB428] that he was unable to find a complete list. See a presentation by Edward Price, 57min where he says they have uncovered 357 names in the writings of Persian scholar named Khasravi.
    • Among those who gave their lives at Fort Tabarsi was Mullá Ja'far, the sifter of wheat and the first to embrace the Faith in Isfahan. [AY58]

  2. 1932-11-23
      The passing of George Adam Benke (b. Fredericksfelt, south Russia in 1878) in Sofia, Bulgaria. Shoghi Effendi declared him to be "the first European martyr. [BW5:416–418, LDG1p263]
    • He had become a Bahá'í as a result of the visit of Harlan and Grace Ober to Leipzig in 1920 and the further efforts of Miss Alma Knoblock. [BW5p416]
    • He translated the works of Bahálláh that had been translated into Russian by Thomansky and Rosenberg.
    • In June of 1931 he was called upon to help Marion Jack in Sofia where is knowledge of Russian facilitated his efforts. He stayed for three months.
    • Again in 1932 he was asked to go to Sofia where he passed away after a very short period of discomfort.
    • Shoghi Effendi called him the first European martyr. [LDG1:263; MC359]

  3. 1933-10-23
      Keith Ransom-Kehler died of smallpox in Isfahán after a year of intensive travel around Iran. [BW5 p389-410; BN No 80 January 1934 p11; LoF99-109]

    • Shoghi Effendi named her America's 'first and distinguished martyr'. [BW5:398] As well as "the first Western martyr on Persian soil" . [DND46]
    • Shoghi Effendi elevated her to the rank of Hand of the Cause on 28 October, 1933. [BW5:398, MoCxxii]

  4. 1980-09-07 — The execution by firing squad of Mahmoud Hasanzadeh (41), Fereidoun Faridani (58), Ali Motahhari (44), Azizollah Zabihian (56), Jalal Mostaghim (52), Abdol-Vahhab Kazemi [-Manshadi] (85), Nourollah Akhtar-Khavari (61) at a place some 10 km outside of Yazd at a spot called Golestan Yazd. They were executed on a charge of treason. [Archives of the Bahá'í Persecution in Iran]

    Some 19 years later on the anniversary of their martyrdom some 500 souls gathered at Golestan Yazd and circled around the place of martyrdom. The gathering was arranged by the Bahá'í community of Yasd and the relatives of these seven martyrs were special quests.
